The Oologah Lake Leader is Oklahoma’s most honored community newspaper. It has been named the best midsize weekly newspaper 16 times in the past 28 years by the Oklahoma Press Association. The Leader was founded in 1982 by J. R. Haney and has been owned since 1984 by John and Faith Wylie, who live in Oologah. The newspaper covers Oologah, Talala and northwest Rogers County.
 
Staff
John M. Wylie II, the Leader’s publisher and editor, has a national reputation in energy, environmental and investigative journalism. He was a member of the Pulitzer-prize winning staff at The Kansas City Star before purchasing the Leader in 1984. He has won the top editorial award in Oklahoma six years. In addition to newspaper work, John is an expert in crisis public information and serves as PIO for OTEMS.

Carolyn Estes, Leader marketing director, is a national expert in using newspapers in schools. She created the award-winning feature “For the Kid in You” for the Leader’s NIE program. The feature is now nationally syndicated. She has also written three serials children’s stories for the Oklahoma Newspaper Foundation. She was the Leader’s news editor before taking over advertising and marketing duties, where she has set new records for advertising sales.

Chris Edens, Leader city editor, began her journalism career at Owasso High School, where she was editor of the Ram page in the Owasso Reporter for two years. She studied journalism and marketing at OSU and played on the OSU women’s rugby team. She came to the Leader from the Nowata Star, where she was editor.

Faith Wylie, Leader publisher and general manager, handles design and production for the Leader. Her background is in graphic design, photography and direct marketing. Her personal column has been named the best in the state two years.

Tim Carman, an Oologah graduate, handles distribution for the Leader. He picks up thousands of copies of the newspaper each week from the printer, delivers labeled papers to the Post Office, and services the stores that sell individual copies of the paper.
