Kindergarten teacher Georgia Ramsey has been chosen as the Oologah Teacher of the Year.

Ramsey was shocked and excited when she got the news last week. Lower elementary principal Crysti York made the announcement over the school intercom and Ramsey said her students went berserk.

I was very humbled they chose me out of all the fantastic teachers in the district. They’re all very talented and I look up to each and every one of them,” she said.

Ramsey taught Pre-K for two years at Oologah and she’s taught kindergarten for one year. Ramsey loves teaching at Oologah and she’s been impressed with the district and the town.

I love being in a smaller school system with all the community involvement and the way parents give 100 percent,” she said. “I had to embrace all the parents who wanted to help and I’ve developed a lot of positive relationships. I’ve never experienced a community like this. The way everyone comes together is mind blowing.”

Ramsey believes she was destined to be a teacher, but it wasn’t her first career choice. She grew up as a “military brat” in Georgia. She met her husband while attending the University of West Georgia.

Ramsey originally wanted to become a teacher, but her husband convinced her that real estate was the way to go. She earned her bachelor’s degree in business and she and her husband owned an appraisal company for ten years.

I enjoyed it but I could tell something was missing,” she said.

After the housing market crashed, Ramsey decided to go back to school and get her teaching degree. Her husband’s family lives in the Owasso area and she began applying for teaching jobs in Georgia and Oklahoma.

She got a job in Bartlesville where she taught for one year. Ramsey and her two daughters lived with her husband’s parents for several months before the family officially made the move to Oklahoma. Her husband works for the Tulsa Police Department. Ramsey quickly realized that her passion was in the classroom.

I know this where I’m supposed to be,” Ramsey said. “I love being around children all day. This is definitely what I was put on this planet to do.”
