Top-ranked teams in 4A baseball ran into a roadblock last week–the Oologah Mustangs.
Oologah took down #1 Catoosa at home and picked up road wins over #2 Berryhill and #3Piedmont. The Mustangs are now 24-9.
Oologah moved to #9 in the rankings after impressive wins over the top teams in 4A.
“It was a good learning experience for us. We learned that we can compete with anybody in the state. It was like a mini state tournament for us before playoffs,” Mustang head coach Kerry Hallman said.
Oologah 3-Catoosa 0
The Mustangs put a nice feather in their caps with a 3-0 win over Catoosa last Friday.
It was the Indians’ second loss of the season. Senior Tim Luce picked up the shutout on the mound.
“Caleb Buchfink had a big hit for us and Timmy was tough as nails all game. We saw their best pitcher. He was good, but Timmy was better,” coach Hallman said.
Oologah 2-Piedmont 0
The Mustangs went on the road and took downPiedmont2-0 Saturday.
It was a defensive battle and Oologah freshmen Caleb Buchfink had an outstanding game on the mound fanning ten Wildcat batters. Buchfink is 8-0 as a starter.
“I started Caleb in the Piedmont game and it was one of the best performances from a 15 year-old I’ve ever seen,” Hallman said.
Oologah 6- Berryhill 5
The Mustangs knocked off Berryhill 6-5 in the second game of a double header Saturday.
“It’s been two years since we’ve beaten them so it was a nice win for us. Tyler Harris and Logan Armstrong both went two for four and Dalton Barnes hit a triple and scored twice,” Hallman said.
Oologah 12-Wagoner 4
The Mustangs run ruled Wagoner 12-4 Monday.
The Mustangs will take on Inola today (Thursday, April 25) in district playoffs. The first game starts at 4:30 p.m. with the second game immediately following.
If necessary, the third game will be played Friday at 4:30 p.m. The winner of the best of three series will advance to regionals. Inola is 13-13 and unranked.
